The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into what it described as “potentially unacceptable behaviour” following post-match clashes between players after the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final encounter between Algeria and Nigeria.

In a statement released on Monday, CAF confirmed that the incident has been referred to its disciplinary board, warning that sanctions could follow if individuals involved are found guilty of wrongdoing. The governing body said it would take “appropriate action” once investigations are concluded.

Tensions boiled over at the final whistle of Saturday’s match in Marrakesh, where Nigeria defeated Algeria 2–0 to book a place in the semi-finals. Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams in the second half sealed the victory for the Super Eagles, but celebrations were overshadowed by confrontations between players from both sides on the pitch.

While CAF did not disclose specific details about the altercation or name players under scrutiny, the development has raised concerns within the Nigerian camp. Any disciplinary measures could potentially affect Nigeria’s preparations and squad availability ahead of their semi-final clash against hosts Morocco on Wednesday.

CAF also disclosed that it is examining incidents from another heated quarter-final played on Friday between Morocco and Cameroon. The hosts won that match 2–0 in Rabat, but the game was marred by controversy, with Cameroonian players expressing strong dissatisfaction with the officiating.

The Indomitable Lions were particularly aggrieved by the referee’s decision not to award a penalty following a challenge on Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo in the second half. The decision sparked protests from Cameroonian players and officials, prompting CAF to widen the scope of its investigations.

With the tournament entering its decisive stage, CAF’s intervention underscores its determination to maintain discipline and uphold the integrity of the competition, even as emotions run high and stakes rise.
