Benue State Commissioner for Health and Human Services Dr Paul Ogwuche on Tuesday reported that the number of suspected Lassa fever cases in the state has risen to 383, with 47 confirmed positive. The overall death toll has reached 14 since the outbreak began.

The State Epidemiologist Dr Msuega Asema had earlier reported in February that 10 people had d, with 251 suspected cases and 45 confirmed positive. Dr Ogwuche said there have been no deaths in the past 11 days, with only six new positive cases confirmed in the same period.

Currently, 20 patients are receiving treatment in isolation centres, including 14 at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital and six at the Federal Medical Center Makurdi.

Ogwuche attributed the positive development to massive sensitisation and health education campaigns, as well as support from partners including MSF, WHO, and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control NCDC.

“The rates have dropped drastically because we are actively combing for suspected cases. Surveillance is ongoing in all 23 LGAs, and health workers are trained on infection prevention and control. Patients are being tracked early and taken to isolation centres for treatment,” he said.

The commissioner noted that early detection and monitoring of contacts have improved patient outcomes and reduced mortality. He also highlighted that functional laboratories, regular updates, and government funding have strengthened the response. Informational materials will soon be distributed to 15 IDP camps in the state to further prevent spread.

Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness endemic to West Africa, caused by the Lassa virus and primarily transmitted by the multimammate rat. Authorities continue to emphasise early reporting, treatment, and strict adherence to hygiene and infection control measures.
