On December 7, 2025, Benin’s government announced that an attempted coup by armed soldiers had been thwarted. The coup, led by Colonel Tigri Pascal and his group, the Military Committee for Refoundation, was declared on state television, where they claimed to have seized power, suspended the constitution, and closed the nation’s borders. They cited national security concerns in northern Benin and the neglect of fallen soldiers as their motivations.

Interior Minister Alassane Seidou quickly addressed the nation, reassuring citizens that the coup had been foiled and asserting the loyalty of the Beninese Armed Forces to the republic, emphasizing their commitment to stability. Gunfire was reported in several Cotonou neighborhoods, particularly near President Patrice Talon’s residence, prompting the French embassy to advise its citizens to remain indoors.

The attempted coup drew swift condemnation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, both reaffirming their support for the Beninese government and constitutional integrity. This incident occurred just months before the April presidential election, amidst rising jihadist violence and political tensions related to a recently adopted constitution extending presidential terms to seven years. It marked the first serious coup attempt in Benin since its early post-independence era.

The atmosphere in Cotonou remained tense, with a significant military presence and ongoing operations to secure the area. Authorities urged citizens to remain calm and continue their regular activities. This coup attempt highlights the growing challenges facing West Africa, where multiple countries have experienced military takeovers in recent years, prompting the international community to emphasize the importance of democratic governance and regional stability.
