Benin City Wins One Million Dollar Global Innovation Award in Bloomberg Mayors Challenge

Benin City the capital of Edo State has secured a one million dollar global innovation award in the Bloomberg Mayors Challenge after emerging as one of the top cities selected from more than six hundred entries across the world.

The recognition places Benin City among twenty five cities from twenty countries that reached the final stage of the prestigious competition. Among the cities selected globally only four African cities made the final list and Benin City proudly represents Nigeria on that stage.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor Patrick Akhere the award reflects the growing capacity of the city to create practical and innovative solutions to major public challenges especially in the area of healthcare delivery.

Governor Monday Okpebholo welcomed the recognition and described it as a strong reflection of the Edo State government commitment to innovation and improved healthcare systems for residents across the state.

He explained that the achievement proves that creative ideas developed in Benin City can compete successfully with solutions from cities across the globe. The governor also noted that the award highlights the dedication and resilience of the team working to transform healthcare services in the state.

Okpebholo praised the Edo State Ministry of Health and the professionals behind the project that earned the city the global recognition. He said the award further strengthens the reputation of Edo State as a place where forward thinking leadership and meaningful public sector reforms are being pursued.

The Bloomberg Mayors Challenge is widely regarded as one of the most competitive global platforms that encourages cities to develop bold solutions to urban problems. Cities selected for the program receive funding and technical support to help implement their ideas and create lasting improvements for their residents.
