Vincent Kompany has described Bayern Munich’s upcoming Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund as equivalent to winning “a mini title,” highlighting the significance of the rivalry in German football.

Bayern, eight points clear at the top of the table, can take a major step toward defending their Bundesliga crown with a win on Saturday. The fixture, known as ‘Der Klassiker,’ also recalls the 2013 Champions League final between the two sides and has grown into one of Germany’s most high profile football rivalries.

Kompany said, “It’s a Klassiker. For me, it’s always a title in its own right, even if people say we can’t win anything more now. These games are also important to the masses, so it’s also a smaller title.” He emphasized that victory in Dortmund remains an absolute priority for the team.

Bayern have lost only once in the league this season, and they defeated Dortmund 2 1 in the reverse fixture in October. Kompany also confirmed that Bayern captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is expected to return from a calf injury, potentially making his 45th appearance against Dortmund. Neuer, who turns 40 this summer, could play his final match against the rivals before his contract expires.
