RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager could become one of the most intriguing free agents on the market this summer, with Bayern Munich reportedly weighing up a move for the tough-tackling Austrian.

Known across the Bundesliga for his fearless, combative style, Schlager has earned comparisons to Bayern legend Bastian Schweinsteiger thanks to his relentless energy and willingness to battle in midfield. Despite his importance to Leipzig, the 28-year-old currently earns a modest €5 million per season, making him an attractive, low-risk option for top clubs seeking experience without a transfer fee.

German great Lothar Matthäus believes Bayern should act quickly. With Leon Goretzka expected to depart, Matthäus sees Schlager as a natural replacement, praising his international pedigree and deep understanding of the league. He also highlighted the midfielder’s ability to balance defensive grit with attacking contribution, describing him as similar in style to Konrad Laimer. His arrival could even allow Laimer to focus more consistently on a right-back role.

Leipzig have already confirmed Schlager will leave when his contract expires at the end of the 2025/26 season. Since joining from Wolfsburg in 2022, he has made 97 appearances, scoring four goals and providing nine assists, while helping the club lift both the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup.

Club sporting director Marcel Schäfer thanked Schlager for his commitment and professionalism, acknowledging his decision to seek a new challenge.

For Bayern, signing a proven Bundesliga performer on a free could be smart, efficient business.
