Barcelona won 5-3 against Real Betis in a match that stood out for more than the score. Before play began, coach Hansi Flick made a bold choice by starting a very young team.
Reports say the average age of the eleven starters was 23.34 years. That is the lowest average for a Barcelona La Liga starting lineup since December 28 1930. On that day the team that faced Racing Santander had an average age of 23.09 years. For nearly a century Barcelona had not used such a young group in a regular league match.
Nine of the eleven players were 25 or younger. The only two older players were Jules Kounde at 27 and Marcus Rashford at 28. Rashford was the oldest player on the field.
Two players stood out for their age. Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi were both 18. They led a set of young players who saw significant minutes in a top level game. Others in the lineup included Roony Bardghji at 20 Alejandro Balde at 22 and Pedri at 23. Gerard Martin was 23 while Eric Garcia and Joan Garcia were 24. Ferran Torres was 25.
This record is separate from a match in 1984 when Barcelona fielded a team with an even lower average age of 20.69 years. That game is not counted in official stats because the club used academy players during a strike by senior pros. As a result that fixture is treated as an exception rather than a normal benchmark.
Flick’s decision showed a clear move toward trust in youth. The club’s win made the choice look justified on the day and it also highlighted the growing role of young players at Barcelona.
