Amazon Web Services will build new data centres on the edge of Frankfurt, in the towns of Schöneck and Maintal, the mayor announced. Local press reported that the company will invest “more than €1 billion” at the Schöneck site alone.

The Schöneck location sits on a seven‑hectare parcel in the Kilianstädten North II industrial park. Officials have not released details on how many buildings will be built or the construction schedule.

The land was allocated after a competitive bid process that attracted about 45 firms. Council members voted to approve the AWS plan, with 29 in favour and four abstentions. A proposed campus by Hetzner Online was among the other bids considered.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce municipal debt and fund local projects. A power capacity agreement is in place for the site, which the mayor called a “stroke of luck.”

AWS previously said it would invest $9.44 billion in its Frankfurt cloud region by 2026. The company opened its Frankfurt region in 2014 as its second cloud region in Europe and also runs a European Sovereign Cloud unit in Germany’s Brandenburg state.

For now, the new Schöneck and Maintal facilities are set to expand AWS’s footprint around Frankfurt, a major hub for data centre activity in Germany.
