AWS and Google Cloud Launch Fast Private Links to Strengthen Multicloud Reliability

Amazon and Google announced a joint multicloud networking service designed to give customers private, high-speed connections between the two cloud platforms within minutes rather than weeks. The companies said the service addresses rising demand for dependable links at a time when short internet failures can trigger large outages.

The announcement follows an Amazon Web Services outage on October 20 that disrupted thousands of sites and apps worldwide, including Snapchat and Reddit. Analytics firm Parametrix estimates the incident cost U.S. firms between $500 million and $650 million.

The new offering pairs AWS’ Interconnect multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect to increase interoperability and simplify cross-cloud networking. The providers said the service reduces the time and effort required to move data and run applications across both clouds.

“This collaboration between AWS and Google Cloud represents a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity,” said Robert Kennedy, vice president of network services at AWS. Rob Enns, vice president and general manager of cloud networking at Google Cloud, added that the joint network aims to make it easier for customers to transfer data and balance workloads across providers.

Google Cloud named Salesforce as one of the early users of the service. Both companies stressed that the move is part of broader investments by major cloud and technology firms to expand network and compute infrastructure as demand for AI and internet capacity grows.

Amazon’s cloud business reported strong third quarter revenue of $33 billion, compared with Google Cloud’s $15.16 billion. Industry observers view the new multicloud link as a response to the need for greater resilience and flexibility as enterprises rely more on distributed cloud architectures.
