Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has expressed deep admiration for former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, describing him as his idol within the Nigerian national team.

Awaziem revealed that his relationship with Mikel dates back to their early years, when both players lived together in Jos, Plateau State. According to the defender, the shared experience played a key role in shaping his football journey and admiration for the former Super Eagles captain.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash with Mozambique at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Awaziem said Mikel’s influence on his career goes beyond playing position. “John Obi Mikel is my idol. Even though I am not a midfielder, I knew him since I was young,” he said, according to Jekanmo Fan Family. He added that they lived together in an old neighbourhood in Jos and also came through the same football academy.

The Nantes defender noted that watching Mikel’s discipline, professionalism, and leadership over the years inspired him to believe in hard work and consistency, both on and off the pitch. He described Mikel as a role model whose journey from grassroots football to international success continues to motivate younger players.

Awaziem also named Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos as another major influence in his career, particularly in his role as a defender. He praised Ramos’ leadership, aggression, and winning mentality, qualities he hopes to replicate in his own game.

As Nigeria prepares for a crucial AFCON knockout tie, Awaziem’s comments highlight the importance of mentorship and role models in shaping the careers of Super Eagles players.
