Atletico Madrid has secured an agreement to sign Argentine midfielder Thiago Almada from Brazilian club Botafogo, pending a medical examination and contract formalities. The 24-year-old, who can also operate as a winger, is set to join the La Liga side on a contract through 2030. The transfer fee is reported to be around €21 million

Almada’s professional journey began with Vélez Sarsfield in 2018, where he made a significant impact before moving to Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United. During his tenure in MLS, Almada was instrumental in Atlanta’s midfield, showcasing his playmaking abilities and contributing to the team’s offensive prowess. In 2024, he transferred to Botafogo, where he played a pivotal role in securing both the Brazilian Serie A title and the Copa Libertadores. His performances in Brazil caught the attention of European clubs, leading to a loan move to Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1 earlier this year.

Internationally, Almada has been a key figure for the Argentina national team. Atletico Madrid’s acquisition of Almada is seen as a strategic move to bolster their midfield options. The club has been active in the transfer market, also securing midfielder Álex Baena from Villarreal and Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta.
