In March 2025, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and Labour Party spokesperson Yunusa Tanko announced the formation of a coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where Atiku confirmed the coalition’s intent to unseat the current administration. (guardian.ng)

The coalition’s formation was prompted by President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, which led to the suspension of elected officials, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu. Atiku and his allies condemned this action as unconstitutional and an overreach of presidential powers, urging Nigerians to reject it. (guardian.ng)

The coalition’s formation has sparked mixed reactions within Nigeria’s political landscape. Supporters view it as a necessary step to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu’s administration. However, critics question the coalition’s viability and unity. Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau dismissed the coalition as a mere gathering of individuals with presidential ambitions, lacking a structured political framework. (punchng.com)

Additionally, the Northern Conscience Movement (NCM) criticized the coalition, labeling it a “gathering of political has-beens” driven by personal ambition rather than national interest. They argued that the coalition’s key figures have a history of failed leadership and divisive politics, questioning their credibility and vision for Nigeria’s future. (pulse.ng)

In response to the coalition’s formation, the APC has intensified efforts to solidify its support base, particularly in the South-South and South-East regions. Reports indicate that defections from opposition parties to the APC have been observed, with some stakeholders viewing the coalition as predominantly a Northern affair. (vanguardngr.com)

As the 2027 elections approach, the dynamics between the coalition and the ruling APC will significantly influence Nigeria’s political trajectory. The effectiveness of the coalition in uniting opposition forces and presenting a formidable challenge to President Tinubu’s re-election bid remains to be seen.
