Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress ADC.

Kwankwaso officially joined the coalition backed party on Monday after resigning from the NNPP on Sunday. He registered as a member in Kano and received his party card, marking his formal defection.

Reacting on social media, Atiku tweeted, “When men of conviction come together, power trembles. Welcome aboard.” The message was accompanied by a photo of Kwankwaso holding his ADC membership card to signify the move.

The event drew several prominent political figures including former Senate President David Mark, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senator Dino Melaye, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie Oyegun.

Prior to the defection, Atiku and Kwankwaso met in Abuja on Saturday for a courtesy visit where they discussed national issues. Atiku described the meeting as a robust discussion on the state of the nation, highlighting ongoing engagement between key political actors in Nigeria.

Political analysts suggest Kwankwaso’s move to the ADC could strengthen the party’s presence in northern Nigeria and influence political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. His membership brings significant political experience and grassroots support, which the ADC intends to leverage for strategic growth.

Observers note that this defection reflects a broader trend of high profile politicians shifting allegiances, signaling potential realignments and coalition building in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
