Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has warmly welcomed Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling it a landmark moment in Nigeria’s political coalition landscape.

Peter Obi formally defected to the ADC on Wednesday at an event held at Nike Lake Resort in Enugu State. At the event, Obi called on Nigerians and opposition groups to unite under a broad national coalition aimed at rescuing Nigeria from poverty, disunity, and democratic decline. He also criticized the current political leadership for state capture, economic mismanagement, and the erosion of democratic values.

In response, Atiku posted on his verified X account, describing Obi’s official move to the ADC as the start of a stronger, more coordinated opposition capable of challenging for power and delivering good governance to Nigerians.

“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress,” Atiku said.

He expressed hope that Obi’s entry would deepen collaboration among opposition leaders and energize efforts to offer Nigerians a credible alternative. “It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people,” Atiku added.
