Israeli airstrikes in southern Gaza led to the deaths of at least 25 Palestinians, including women and children, according to health authorities. The strikes, which occurred in areas controlled by Hamas such as the Zeitoun suburb of Gaza City, Shejaia, and Khan Younis, were described by the Israeli military as retaliation for gunfire aimed at Israeli forces, breaching a ceasefire established nearly six weeks earlier. Fortunately, no Israeli soldiers were reported injured during the incident.
This ceasefire, brokered by the U.S. in October 2025, was intended to stabilize the region and facilitate humanitarian aid. However, the recent attacks have ignited concerns regarding the fragility of this truce. Since the ceasefire began on October 10, reports from Palestinian officials indicate that Israeli strikes have resulted in 305 deaths, nearly half occurring during a single retaliatory attack. In contrast, Israeli sources note the deaths of three soldiers while claiming that numerous militants were targeted.
The airstrikes also hit civilian structures, including shelters for displaced families, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The international community has voiced deep concern over the rising violence and its toll on civilians, with increasing calls for renewed efforts toward a lasting ceasefire and greater protections for civilian lives. The situation remains highly volatile, as both sides continue to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire and escalating the humanitarian crisis.
