On December 22, 2025, ASEAN Foreign Ministers met in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the escalating conflict. Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair, highlighted ongoing efforts to convince both countries to cease fighting. Concerns were raised about the aftermath of the clashes, including significant civilian suffering, damage to infrastructure, and the disruption of lives for those living in border areas. The ministers stressed the importance of allowing affected civilians to return home safely and with dignity.
ASEAN’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully was reaffirmed, urging both nations to exercise restraint and work towards ending hostilities. The ministers highlighted the need for restoring trust and returning to dialogue, utilizing both bilateral mechanisms and the facilitative role of the ASEAN Chair. They also underscored the importance of cooperation in humanitarian demining and military de-escalation along the border, to be overseen by an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT).
The General Border Committee (GBC), a bilateral mechanism, is set to meet on December 24, 2025, to discuss ceasefire implementation and verification. ASEAN hopes this meeting will pave the way for a lasting peace. The recent skirmishes have caused at least 22 deaths in Thailand and 19 in Cambodia, displacing over half a million people. The conflict has drawn international attention, with calls for both nations to de-escalate tensions and pursue a peaceful resolution. The situation remains dynamic, making the upcoming GBC meeting crucial for regional stability.
