The Arewa Youth Movement has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to select a Northern Christian as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election. This recommendation comes as part of the group‘s effort to address perceived religious and regional imbalances that were prominent in the previous election.
In a briefing held in Abuja on Monday, the leaders of the movement, including National President Ambassador Muhammed Sa’ad Aboki, stressed the importance of inclusivity in the electoral process. They believe that choosing a Northern Christian as a vice-presidential candidate would enhance President Tinubu’s appeal in crucial regions, particularly in the Middle Belt and among northern Christian communities.
Ambassador Aboki highlighted that Tinubu’s re-election bid presents a unique opportunity to reshape the political landscape. He explained that selecting a Christian running mate from Northern Nigeria would help bridge the religious divide and expand support in regions with significant Christian populations. This move would also signal a commitment to unity and inclusivity, essential in a diverse nation like Nigeria.
The 2023 election results underscored the need for religious balance in securing broad electoral support. President Tinubu’s loss in areas with large Christian populations, such as the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Plateau states, was a key factor. The Arewa Youth Movement argues that by addressing this imbalance, Tinubu can strengthen his chances of securing a broader mandate in the upcoming election.
