The All Progressives Grand Alliance said on Wednesday that it will keep working with progressive national leaders and that its National Executive Council may soon move to formally back President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for the 2027 elections.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, APGA National Chairman Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa said the party sees itself as the main progressive force in Nigeria and aligns with the President’s way of leading. He noted the party’s history of cooperation with central government when that government follows good policies.

“It is in the history of the party to work with the central government that is progressive. Counting from the days of Mr Peter Obi as Governor of Anambra State, through the days of Willie Obiano, to the present administration of Professor Chukwuma Soludo, APGA has worked with the government at the centre with good reasons, delivering good governance to the people. And let me stress further, it is not about participating in elections but ensuring the party works according to its manifestos.

“I have always said that the performance and progress of any political party lies in the positive performance of its leadership, and APGA is fortunate to have produced leaders who saw reasons to work alongside progressives. That is what the Governor of Anambra, Professor Soludo, is demonstrating.”

On rumors that Governor Soludo might join the ruling party, Ezeokenwa was clear. “Professor Soludo is going nowhere. I can say unequivocally that the Anambra State Governor, as party leader, never nursed such ambition.”

He also pointed to President Tinubu’s recent visit to Anambra State and said that the visit showed a shared progressive outlook. “You saw the day Mr President visited Anambra State, he wore the APGA insignia without bias, so we are quite in support of him.”

On security, Ezeokenwa criticised the heavy central control of the system and said APGA supports moving power closer to states and local areas. He added that the party will push for decentralised approaches to security.

Ezeokenwa praised the President’s leadership and welcomed the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as a minister. “I can say it again and challenge anyone that she is the best Minister under this administration. This is the first time the party is producing a Minister not of the same party,” he said.

The chairman tied APGA’s strong result in the last Anambra governorship to the governor’s record in delivering services. He rejected criticism from opponents as misplaced, and he pointed to the party’s wide win in most local areas and more than 75 percent of the vote as proof of APGA’s public support.

He closed by saying the party will keep working to deliver democratic gains to the people and that it stands ready to act in line with its goals as it prepares for the 2027 contest.
