The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has highlighted that reinforcing the rule of law is central to rebuilding public confidence in governance and tackling insecurity across Nigeria.
Basiru made the remarks while delivering the 4th Distinguished Personality Lecture at the College of Law, Osun State University, titled “Democratic Governance, National Security and the Rule of Law.” He emphasized that strict adherence to democratic principles is vital for promoting stability and strengthening national cohesion.
He called on the Executive to operate strictly within its constitutional mandate, urged the Legislature to deepen oversight functions, and stressed the Judiciary’s responsibility to safeguard its interpretative authority. “Democratic governance provides the mechanism for legitimate authority; the rule of law regulates the exercise of that authority; and national security creates the enabling environment for the political community to flourish,” Basiru stated.
According to him, democracy, national security, and the rule of law are interlinked pillars essential for state stability. Strengthening these institutions, he added, will rebuild public trust, consolidate democratic norms, and position Nigeria as a model of democratic resilience in Africa.
Basiru also underscored the importance of civil society organisations, the media, and citizens in ensuring accountability within the security architecture. He expressed support for the establishment of state police, noting that a centrally controlled police force cannot adequately respond to localized security challenges.
In his remarks, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa highlighted the need for the Executive to uphold constitutional provisions to prevent impunity and strengthen democratic governance.
