The Anambra State Government has announced a restriction of movement across the state from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 28, 2024, in preparation for the upcoming local council elections. This directive is part of efforts to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections and maintain order throughout the process.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, who clarified that the restriction was requested by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) to facilitate an uninterrupted and orderly voting process across the state’s local government areas. In his statement, Mefor emphasized that the movement restriction applies to all residents of Anambra, urging the public to adhere to the directive for the greater good of the state’s democratic exercise.
Dr. Mefor further noted that this temporary restriction is a necessary measure to minimize disruptions, avoid potential security issues, and ensure that eligible voters can participate in the elections without external interference. Security agencies are expected to be deployed at key points across the state to enforce the directive and provide additional security for the election process.
In addition to maintaining order, the movement restriction is designed to ensure that voting materials and officials reach all designated polling units on time. Local council elections are a critical part of the state’s democratic framework, as they determine leadership at the grassroots level, affecting local governance, development, and resource management.
The government has called on all residents to cooperate with the restrictions, stressing the importance of the elections in shaping the future of local communities across Anambra State. Dr. Mefor also expressed the state government’s commitment to a free, fair, and transparent election process.
As the election date approaches, Ndi Anambra are reminded of their civic duty to vote and contribute to the development of the state, while respecting the movement restrictions to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral environment.
