The Anambra State Government has reached an agreement with traders to commence a phased remodeling of the Onitsha Main Market, aimed at improving infrastructure and creating a more organised and sustainable trading environment.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo disclosed the development on Friday following a dialogue with traders from Onitsha Main Market and adjoining markets at the Government House, Awka. He said the engagement resulted in a mutual understanding to begin immediate reinvigoration of the market while minimising disruption to commercial activities.

“Leadership sometimes requires taking inconvenient but necessary decisions to secure the future,” Soludo said, adding that the exercise is part of efforts to reposition the market to global standards.

Key components of the emergency intervention include reclamation of market parks, restoration of walkways, construction of public conveniences, as well as repainting and colour-coding of shops and trading lines. The governor noted that the initiative aligns with his administration’s manifesto to develop planned and sustainable cities, communities, and markets across the state.

Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Chijioke Okpalugo, confirmed that traders had opted for the remodeling plan proposed by the government. However, he requested additional time to enable traders to remove goods from areas affected by illegal structures to facilitate smooth implementation of the project.

The phased approach is designed to balance market development with ongoing commercial activity, ensuring that traders can continue their businesses while the government executes its plans. The initiative underscores Anambra State’s commitment to modernising markets and improving the livelihoods of traders and residents alike.
