In early May 2025, a tragic incident unfolded along the Okigwe-Owerri highway in Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, when gunmen ambushed travelers, resulting in at least 30 fatalities. Amnesty International reported that more than 20 vehicles and trucks were set ablaze during the attack, which occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2025. (apnews.com)

The assailants, operating in three groups, barricaded the highway around 4:00 AM GMT, opening fire indiscriminately and setting vehicles ablaze. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, Nigerian authorities suspect the involvement of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the paramilitary wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group advocating for the secession of southeastern Nigeria. The attack has reignited concerns over the persistent violence in the region, which has a history of secessionist movements dating back to the 1960s. The failed attempt to establish the Republic of Biafra led to a civil war from 1967 to 1970, resulting in the deaths of approximately one million people, many from starvation. (apnews.com)

In response to the recent attack, Nigerian authorities have initiated a full-scale search and cordon operation, combing nearby forests and surrounding areas where the suspects are believed to be hiding. One suspect connected to the attack was killed in a joint operation by law enforcement agencies. An intensive manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice. Amnesty International has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the killings, emphasizing that international law requires the Nigerian government to … and bring perpetrators to justice. (aljazeera.com)

The Nigerian government is also engaging with Finnish authorities to hold Simon Ekpa, a prominent IPOB leader currently in custody in Finland, accountable for his alleged actions. Ekpa is known for his role in promoting secessionist activities and has been a significant figure in the ongoing unrest in the region. (apnews.com)

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges Nigeria faces in addressing separatist violence and ensuring the safety of its citizens. The government’s response, including military operations and international cooperation, reflects the complexity of the situation and the need for a multifaceted approach to restore peace and stability to the southeastern region.
