Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former transportation minister and ex-governor of Rivers State, has paid tribute to Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a rare constant in Nigeria’s turbulent political landscape. According to Amaechi, Atiku’s enduring dedication to democratic principles and national development distinguishes him from many of his peers.

In a message commemorating Atiku’s 79th birthday, Amaechi emphasized that the occasion is not merely a celebration of age, but a recognition of a legacy that has profoundly influenced Nigeria’s political trajectory.

Reflecting on Atiku’s formative years in the Nigerian Customs Service, Amaechi noted his pivotal role in rallying pro-democracy movements during the 1980s and 1990s. These efforts, he said, were foundational in ushering in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, with Atiku playing a central role in shaping the political frameworks that underpin today’s governance.

Amaechi further praised Atiku’s vice-presidential tenure from 1999 to 2007, highlighting his push for reforms that expanded Nigeria’s global footprint and unlocked economic opportunities for countless citizens. He asserted that the ripple effects of those initiatives are still evident in the country’s institutions.

What truly sets Atiku apart, Amaechi added, is his resilience in championing democratic values despite facing political adversity. He lauded Atiku’s continued engagement in national discourse, his advocacy for reform, and his unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential.

Concluding his tribute, Amaechi offered a personal prayer: “As we honour your enduring service to our country, my family and I join fellow Nigerians in praying for your continued health, wisdom, and strength to keep shaping our nation’s future.” He closed with the Hausa blessing, “Allah ya kara maka lafiya da hikima”, “May God increase you in health and wisdom.”
