Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has pledged full implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda across all 774 local government areas in the country.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja during his inauguration, ALGON Acting National President Iliyasu Zakari emphasized the association’s commitment to grassroots development and national progress. Zakari noted that the inauguration marks a major step toward strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Governors Forum to drive the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in rural communities.

Zakari, who also chairs Agwara Local Government Council in Niger State, assured that the Board of Trustees would provide purposeful leadership at the grassroots level. ALGON BOT Chairman Shaban Ohinoyi described the inauguration as a defining moment in the association’s pursuit of unity, ility, and development-driven governance.

The event also saw Senator Simon Lalong appointed Patron of ALGON. Lalong highlighted the critical role of local governments in national growth, noting that President Tinubu has consistently emphasized local government autonomy for effective administration. He further stated that the National Assembly is actively addressing constitutional matters surrounding local government autonomy through ongoing amendment processes.

“This inauguration positions ALGON to meaningfully contribute to national development, especially at the grassroots where governance impacts people’s daily lives,” Zakari said.

The move underscores renewed efforts by ALGON and key stakeholders to deepen governance, strengthen local institutions, and accelerate development across Nigeria in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
