Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the federal government will work to restore calm in Plateau State, and he stressed that outside help cannot solve Nigeria’s problems. He made the remarks at the Jos Polo Field while welcoming political defectors into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr Akpabio told the crowd that Nigerians themselves must lead efforts to end violence and that President Bola Tinubu is committed to tackling insecurity in Plateau and across the nation. He appealed for divine support and for leaders to prioritise peace, saying: “We are calling on God the Almighty to help us at the centre to bring peace to Plateau. Anybody that will rule Plateau must be committed to peace. This is the only party that cares for you.”
He promised that the government would work hard to bring stability and warned against relying on foreign actors to fix local conflicts. “It is not people outside that will come and give you peace. It is we that must bring peace. We must live in peace with one another. Nigeria must have peace for progress to come.
“I cry whenever I hear the killing of a human being, whether a child or an adult. This problem we are having now did not start today; so many people have died in Plateau.
“Nigeria is crying out. A lot of blood has been shed, and we are not happy. The President of Nigeria is equally not happy.”
Akpabio said efforts to restore peace would be stepped up and urged residents to back President Tinubu and the APC, arguing that cooperation with the government would bring development and stability to the state.
