An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, specifically the Sidon district, escalated hostilities and violated the ceasefire established in November 2024. The strike targeted a vehicle on the Aqtnit Qantara road, killing three people, including one soldier from the Lebanese Armed Forces, as confirmed by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The Israeli military claimed the operation was aimed at Hezbollah members, the Iran-backed militant group active in the region.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions and the fragile nature of the ceasefire that had been maintained for over a year, despite Israel conducting regular airstrikes in southern Lebanon, alleging they targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and personnel. Since the ceasefire’s implementation, over 340 Lebanese citizens have been killed in such attacks.

The Lebanese government condemned these violations, calling for international intervention to uphold the ceasefire and prevent further escalation. They urged the United Nations and other international organizations to play a more proactive role in monitoring the situation and ensuring compliance from all involved parties.

The persistent breaches of the ceasefire have raised alarms regarding the potential for renewed conflict and significant humanitarian impacts on the civilian population in southern Lebanon.

Amidst increasing tensions, the international community continues to advocate for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to address the underlying issues between Israel and Hezbollah. The recent airstrike serves as a stark reminder of the delicate status of the ceasefire and underscores the urgent need for sustained peace initiatives in the region to avoid further violence and instability.
