The Taliban administration in Afghanistan has announced plans to construct a series of dams along the Kunar River as part of a broader effort to expand water infrastructure and support agriculture and energy generation. Officials said the projects aim to improve irrigation reduce flooding and increase domestic electricity supply.

The announcement has drawn attention from neighboring countries due to the transboundary nature of the river. Regional experts note that water management on shared rivers requires coordination to prevent downstream impacts particularly for Pakistan which relies on the Kunar basin.

Development analysts caution that large scale infrastructure projects face technical financial and environmental challenges given Afghanistan’s economic constraints.

International observers also stress the need for transparent planning and regional dialogue. While the projects are presented as vital for national development they may carry diplomatic implications for water sharing and regional cooperation.
