The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says its chief goal is to stop what it describes as a move toward full civilian rule by the All Progressives Congress (APC). Senator David Mark, the party’s National Chairman, made this claim on Monday when the ADC opened its new national headquarters in Abuja. He said the party is already getting ready for the 2027 general election.
“Let it be known to all that this coalition of national political opposition groups goes beyond gaining political power. It is a concerted effort to rebuild the crumbling pillars of Nigeria’s democracy.
“The mission is clear: Rescue Nigeria. Rebuild Nigeria. Return power to the people,” said Mark.
He accused the APC-led federal government of taking over key democratic institutions and of focusing more on party politics than on running the country. He warned that moves to weaken other parties were meant to close off choices for voters ahead of 2027.
“The blatant destabilisation and infiltration of all major opposition political parties is aimed at achieving only one objective: to enhance total state capture and leave Nigerians with no alternative or options in 2027. This coalition is to prevent our country’s descent into a one-party state,” he added.
The ADC’s event drew a number of notable figures. Those linked to the coalition include former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and Peter Obi (Labour Party), former lawmaker Senator Dino Melaye, former youth minister Solomon Dalong, publisher Dele Momodu, Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe, ex-deputy House Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
The coalition formally chose the ADC as its platform on July 2, 2025. At Monday’s ceremony the party said it will work to save the country from collapse and to rebuild democratic systems ahead of the next national polls.
