The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has explained why former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi were missing from the unveiling of its new secretariat in Abuja on November 17, putting to rest rumors of internal conflict.

In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC dismissed claims that Obi deliberately avoided the event due to the building’s past use as Atiku’s campaign office. Abdullahi clarified that Obi was out of the country at the time, while Atiku had other commitments.

The event was attended by ADC National Chairman David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Despite the absence of Obi and Atiku, the party emphasized that both leaders remain part of the coalition.

Mark, while inaugurating the secretariat, described it as a symbol of the coalition’s mission to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. “It is a physical testament to our collective resolve to build a greater nation. This ADC coalition is a historic child of necessity, inspired by people’s desire for good governance, greater accountability, and a stronger democracy,” he said.

Addressing speculation, Abdullahi made it clear that Atiku did not donate the building to the ADC. “Let me state again that Atiku isn’t the owner of the building, and he didn’t donate it to the ADC. He leased the building, and his rent had expired. The ADC rented the building,” he explained.

He also stressed that the event was organized on short notice, which affected attendance. “The programme was impromptu; most of the party leaders were not in attendance. Obi was out of the country, and Atiku wasn’t available. There’s nothing to suggest that Peter Obi is withdrawing from the coalition. He is still with us.”

The ADC reaffirmed its unity and focus on the 2027 elections, stating that there is no division among its leaders and that the coalition remains committed to challenging President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
