The African Democratic Congress has strongly rejected recent remarks by Governor Monday Okpebholo about insecurity in the country.

In a post on X the party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi said the governor’s words were “not just careless, they are disturbing.” The comment came after reports that Okpebholo suggested kidnappings were linked to efforts to influence elections. The governor was reported to have said “They are kidnapping people because somebody wants to win election, it’s not fair. They did this to former President Jonathan and they succeeded, but we know their trick already.”

Abdullahi said many families are still mourning and hoping for their loved ones to return. He argued that instead of offering clear answers the ruling party was “instead of giving them answers, this APC government is busy spinning fancy conspiracy theories.”

The ADC spokesman called the shift away from facts shameful and warned it shows a worrying attitude in the government. He wrote “when government replaces hard evidence and real intelligence with baseless accusations and conspiracy theories, you know that we have a serious problem.”

Abdullahi went further to remind the public of past actions by those now in power. He said “the person that led the weaponisation of insecurity to discredit GEJ is the same man that is in power today.”

The party asked Governor Okpebholo to stop making unproven claims and to focus on helping families and improving security for all citizens.
