The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has urged President Bola Tinubu to review his economic reforms to better address the challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly those in the northern region.

In a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Kaduna on Wednesday, the ACF expressed dissatisfaction with the current administration’s economic policies, noting that they have exacerbated the hardships experienced by the average Nigerian.

The Forum highlighted the unique vulnerabilities of the northern region, pointing to widespread food insecurity, limited access to education and skills training, and a heavy reliance on microeconomic activities for daily survival.

It stressed that while economic reforms are essential, they should not deepen poverty or hardship among the citizens they aim to benefit, particularly in a region already grappling with significant socio-economic challenges.

“The region faces acute and chronic food insecurity; its youths lack education and skills training. Daunting as these may be, they can be reversed. The time to think big is now,” the communiqué stated.

The ACF emphasized the need for reforms to be implemented with sensitivity, warning that the livelihoods of many in the north depend on microeconomic activities. It criticized the current policies for failing to reflect this reality.

“Notwithstanding the parlous state of Arewa’s glaring economic challenges, the policies of the current federal government have continued to worsen matters, with little indication of the needed sensitivity to the precarious existential conditions of Arewa people.

“Succinctly stated, economic reforms, while indeed desirable, should not impoverish the same people they are meant to serve. The people may not be alive to reap the putative benefits,” the communiqué added.

The Forum’s concerns underscore the need for the federal government to adopt a more inclusive approach to economic policy-making, ensuring that reforms address the immediate needs of vulnerable populations without compromising their long-term benefits.

In an earlier statement, the ACF declared its intention to support a Northern candidate in the 2027 presidential election, signaling its commitment to advancing the interests of the region.
