Abdulmumuni Abiola Accuses Brother Kola of Withholding Family Inheritance

Abdulmumuni Abiola, one of the sons of the late Nigerian statesman MKO Abiola, has publicly declared that he will never forgive his elder brother, Kola Abiola, for refusing to distribute their father’s inheritance among his children. In a revealing interview on the “Mic On Podcast” with Seun Okinbaloye, Abdulmumuni accused Kola of withholding funds that their father had willed to his first four wives.

According to Abdulmumuni, MKO Abiola had allocated £650,000 in his will for his first four wives, but despite fulfilling legal requirements like conducting blood tests to determine the legitimate children, Kola has allegedly refused to release the money to them. Abdulmumuni specifically mentioned his mother, Kudirat Olayinka Abiola, who was apportioned £150,000 in the will, but the funds have yet to be distributed to her heirs.

In his remarks, Abdulmumuni expressed deep frustration with his brother’s actions, stating, “We did blood tests so we had a list of qualifying children. If you look at the will and see how systematic it is, he [MKO Abiola] names the wives and apportions the money to them.”

He went on to explain that Kola justified withholding the funds by citing British law, which purportedly prevents the release of the money since Kudirat died before their father. However, Abdulmumuni finds this reasoning questionable, given that Kola, who is responsible for managing the estate, has the authority to distribute the inheritance.

“Kola said because my mum died before my dad, the £150,000 could not be released to us. He also mentioned that his own mother had passed, and he hadn’t received the £300,000 for her either. But you are the one sharing the money, so it’s odd… If he wanted to, he could have given us the money,” Abdulmumuni stated.

This family dispute has highlighted the ongoing tensions within the Abiola family over the management of their late father’s estate. MKO Abiola, a prominent businessman and politician, left behind a large fortune, but the distribution of his wealth has been a source of conflict among his heirs. The rift between Abdulmumuni and Kola is a painful reminder of the challenges that can arise in the aftermath of the passing of a high-profile individual like MKO Abiola.
