The Borno State Police Command has successfully re-arrested Kyari Kur, also known as Henry, a 28-year-old convict who escaped from a correctional facility during recent flooding in Maiduguri, the state capital. The flood, which occurred in September 2024, caused severe damage to the city and its surrounding areas, leading to the collapse of the correctional facility’s fence.
According to a statement released on Friday by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, Kyari Kur had been serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft at the Medium Security Custodian Centre in Maiduguri. The statement detailed that the convict managed to escape when the facility’s perimeter was breached due to the severe flood.
ASP Daso highlighted the devastating impact of the flood, which submerged parts of Maiduguri and weakened the infrastructure of the correctional center. The collapse of the fence provided an opportunity for Kyari Kur and potentially other inmates to flee. However, law enforcement efforts led to his recapture, demonstrating the police’s commitment to maintaining order and ensuring justice is served.
