In a significant step towards promoting patriotism and responsible citizenship, the Federal Government of Nigeria has integrated national values into the curriculum for primary school pupils. This new initiative is designed to instill the ideals and values of Nigeria in the younger generation, ensuring that children grow up with a strong sense of national identity and responsibility.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has also launched a sensitisation and awareness campaign on the National Values Charter to educate the public. The Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, addressed the media at the agency’s office in Osogbo, Osun State. Represented by the National Director of Reform Coordination and Service Improvement, Mrs. Olubukola Olorunfemi, he highlighted the importance of the reform, which is part of the ‘Nigerian Promise‘ and the ‘Citizens Code‘.
According to Issa-Onilu, the reform is not just a recommendation but a mandatory component of the curriculum in both basic and post-basic education levels across the nation. He stated, “The charter is embedded in the ‘Nigerian Promise’ and the ‘Citizens Code’, which outlines seven promises of the country to her citizens and seven obligations of the citizens to the country.”
The implementation of national values in schools is expected to create a generation of young Nigerians who are not only aware of their rights but also understand their duties to their country. The NOA’s efforts in sensitisation and awareness are crucial in ensuring that these values resonate not just within educational institutions but also among communities and families.
By focusing on national values, the Federal Government aims to build a foundation of unity, responsibility, and patriotism, ensuring that Nigeria’s future leaders grow up with the ideals necessary for nation-building.
