Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Leader of the Senate, recently disclosed the collaborative efforts of federal lawmakers from the South-West region in lobbying their colleagues across various geopolitical zones to pass the South West Development Commission (SWDC) Bill. Speaking at the 2024 South-West Assembly of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos, Bamidele highlighted the South-West Caucus’s significant influence within the National Assembly.
He noted, “We are now awaiting concurrence from the House of Representatives before transmitting it to the President for assent.” The Senator emphasized that the success of the SWDC Bill was not solely the result of APC members’ efforts; rather, it included the contributions of lawmakers from other political parties, underscoring the unity required for the region’s development. He stated, “This bill, and many others, reminds us that when it comes to the development of our people, there is no room for division.”
The Senate Leader also acknowledged the South-West Caucus as a stabilizing force within the Senate. He pointed out that the zone has received fair recognition in leadership roles, not only in the Senate but also in the House of Representatives, where they occupy key positions, including the Chief Whip seat.
Bamidele further noted the Caucus’s swift attention to the screening of the President’s nominees for various political positions, showcasing their commitment to facilitating the implementation of transformative policies aimed at propelling the nation toward prosperity and stability.
In his remarks, he called for continued collaboration among lawmakers to ensure further progress, saying, “We will continue to support his reforms as he steers the country towards prosperity and stability.”
This concerted effort by the South-West lawmakers reflects their determination to foster regional development while reinforcing their political influence within the national framework.
