At a recent international conference held in Kaduna, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), addressed the enduring unity of Nigeria, calling on those advocating for the country’s division to reconsider. As Nigeria marks 110 years since its amalgamation, Professor Yakubu underscored that the country’s creation and existence as an indivisible entity should no longer be questioned.
The event, organized by Arewa House in collaboration with Ahmadu Bello University and other research groups, provided a platform for scholars from across Nigeria to reflect on the nation’s journey from 1914 to 2024. The conference theme, “Making and Building of Nigeria: People, Places, Times, and Legacies from 1914 to 2024,” explored the rich history of Nigerian communities, highlighting the connections that predated British colonial rule.
During his speech, Professor Yakubu emphasized that Nigeria’s unity is not only rooted in historical events such as the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914 but also in the deep cultural and social bonds that have linked the various ethnic groups of the region for centuries. He argued that these relationships existed long before colonial powers drew political boundaries, which strengthens the case for a united Nigeria.
Professor Yakubu’s comments come at a time when some voices, both within and outside Nigeria, are questioning the legitimacy of the country’s territorial integrity. Movements advocating for separation or self-determination have gained attention, fueled by political and economic challenges. However, Yakubu affirmed that Nigeria’s indivisibility is a settled issue and must be preserved in the interest of its diverse populations.
His remarks are a reminder of the importance of national unity, especially in the face of contemporary challenges. The conference attendees included historians, political scientists, and economists, all of whom contributed to discussions on the country’s future. These reflections are critical as Nigeria grapples with ongoing issues related to governance, security, and development.
As the nation looks ahead, Yakubu’s call for unity serves as a reminder of Nigeria’s shared history and the need to foster collective progress. While challenges remain, the vision of an indivisible Nigeria, bound by the legacies of its past, continues to guide the nation’s path forward.
