AC Milan’s newly appointed head coach, Massimiliano Allegri, has confirmed that Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić will join the club following the conclusion of the Club World Cup. Modrić, who turns 40 in September, is set to depart Real Madrid after a distinguished 13-year tenure.
In his first press conference since returning to Milan, Allegri expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition. “He‘ll arrive in August,” Allegri stated. “He’s an extraordinary and important player—there’s no need to say more.”
Modrić’s impending move to Milan follows his decision not to renew his contract with Real Madrid, announced in early June. The Croatian international has been a pivotal figure for Madrid since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, amassing six UEFA Champions League titles and the 2018 Ballon d’Or during his tenure.
Allegri, who is returning to Milan after nearly a decade, is expected to integrate Modrić into a midfield that also includes Samuele Ricci and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The coach emphasized the importance of Modrić’s leadership and experience, stating, “We have excellent players. We will play with three midfielders, then depending on the characteristics, we will get them all on the field.”
The acquisition of Modrić signifies Milan’s ambition to reassert itself at the top of Italian and European football. The club is set to commence its 2025–26 campaign with an Italian Cup fixture on August 17, with Modrić expected to be in the squad shortly before then.
As Modrić prepares to conclude his illustrious chapter with Real Madrid, his arrival at Milan is anticipated to bolster the team‘s midfield and provide a wealth of experience to the squad.
