A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Nyesom Wike convened its first National Executive Committee meeting on Monday at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja.

The meeting marks a significant step for the faction following months of internal leadership disputes that rocked the party. The PDP secretariat had been sealed in November after a clash between rival groups led by Tanimu Turaki and Abdulrahman Mohammed, both of whom claimed control of the party structure.

Tensions escalated as the two factions operated parallel leadership systems, deepening divisions within one of Nigeria’s major opposition parties. However, a ruling by the Court of Appeal Nigeria in March brought a turning point by nullifying the Ibadan convention that had produced the Turaki led National Working Committee.

The development effectively strengthened the Mohammed led caretaker structure, paving the way for the latest NEC meeting backed by Wike’s camp.

In a video shared by Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, the former Rivers State governor was seen arriving at the secretariat, where he was received by party stakeholders, elders, and representatives from various states.

Key political figures expected at the meeting include former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, signaling the importance of the gathering in shaping the party’s future direction.

The NEC meeting is seen as a move toward consolidating leadership and restoring order within the party after a prolonged period of factional conflict. It also reflects ongoing efforts by stakeholders to reposition the PDP ahead of future political contests.
