Arthur Okonkwo Names Edwin van der Sar as Goalkeeping Idol After Switching Allegiance to Nigeria

Arthur Okonkwo has named former Manchester United star Edwin van der Sar as his greatest of all time, shortly after confirming his switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria.

Okonkwo, who joined Wrexham A.F.C. from Arsenal in 2024, has continued his steady rise in English football. He played a key role in helping the club secure promotion from League One to the Championship and has since elished himself as their first choice goalkeeper.

The 24 year old has impressed with his composure, agility, and command in the air, as well as his ability to play confidently with his feet. This season, he has kept 10 clean sheets in 38 appearances as Wrexham push for another historic promotion.

Speaking on the Wrexham Podcast, Okonkwo reflected on his development and revealed the influence Van der Sar had on his career. He said the Dutch legend was the goalkeeper he grew up watching and admired most.

Van der Sar, widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in football history, enjoyed a glittering career with Manchester United and played a crucial role in their Premier League and UEFA Champions League successes.

Wrexham’s remarkable rise continues to attract attention, with the club now competing in the Championship playoff race after climbing from non league football in just four years. They currently sit seventh, just two points outside the playoff positions.

With five matches remaining against Birmingham, Stoke, Oxford, Coventry, and Middlesbrough, Okonkwo and his teammates remain firmly in contention for a playoff spot and a possible Premier League dream.

On the international stage, Okonkwo is expected to feature for Nigeria following his switch of allegiance. He could make his debut during the upcoming Unity Cup in Charlton or in international fixtures scheduled against Poland and Portugal in June.

His journey reflects both personal ambition and the growing Nigerian influence in global football.
