US President Donald Trump has announced plans for an immediate naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following the breakdown of peace talks between the United States and Iran.

Trump also renewed threats to target Iran’s energy infrastructure, stating that the United States could dismantle the country’s power and energy systems within a short period if tensions escalate further.

The latest development comes after negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict collapsed, largely due to disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme and control of the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway remains one of the most critical global oil transit routes, making the dispute a major concern for international markets.

US Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, blamed the failure of the talks on Iran’s refusal to abandon uranium enrichment and commit to halting nuclear weapons development. He emphasized that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities remains a top priority for Washington.

On the other hand, Iranian officials rejected the US position, insisting on their sovereign right to pursue nuclear energy for civilian purposes. Iran has also maintained its stance on regulating access to the Strait of Hormuz, including imposing tolls on vessels, a move strongly opposed by the United States.

Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, accused the US of failing to build trust during the negotiations, while former Foreign Minister Javad Zarif stated that Iran would not accept externally imposed conditions.

Efforts to mediate the crisis, including talks hosted in Islamabad, have so far yielded no breakthrough, though Iranian officials indicated that diplomatic engagements may continue.

The escalating tensions have raised fears of broader regional inility, with potential implications for global oil supply, trade routes, and geopolitical security. Analysts warn that any disruption to the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact energy prices and the global economy.
