Thousands of solrs from the 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East as U.S. President Donald Trump considers next steps in the ongoing conflict with Iran.

According to U.S. officials, the deployment includes elements of the division’s headquarters, logistics teams, and a brigade combat unit. The troops, based at Fort Bragg, are joining thousands of additional forces already sent to the region, including sailors, Marines, and Special Operations personnel. Over the weekend alone, about 2,500 Marines were deployed.

While officials did not disclose the exact destination of the troops, the buildup is seen as part of broader preparations for possible future military operations. No final decision has been made to send ground forces into Iran, but the reinforcements are expected to expand U.S. operational capacity.

Military planners are reportedly considering several scenarios, including a potential operation to seize Kharg Island, which handles a significant portion of Iran’s oil exports. Such a move would carry high risks, as the island is within range of Iranian missile and drone systems.

Discussions have also explored the possibility of deploying troops to secure strategic routes like the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for global energy supplies. In more extreme scenarios, ground forces could be used to access and secure sensitive nuclear materials within Iranian territory.

Despite these considerations, diplomatic efforts are still ongoing. Trump has indicated that the U.S. is in talks with what he described as a “more reasonable regime,” while maintaining pressure on Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face further strikes on critical infrastructure.

The potential use of U.S. ground troops carries significant political and military risks, particularly given domestic concerns and previous commitments to avoid prolonged conflicts in the region.

Since the conflict began in late February under Operation Epic Fury, U.S. forces have reportedly struck over 11,000 targets, with hundreds of troops injured and several fatalities recorded.

As tensions continue to rise, global attention remains fixed on the Middle East, with concerns growing over the possibility of a wider and more prolonged conflict.
