A looming political battle is taking shape in Delta North as indications grow that former governor Ifeanyi Okowa may contest the senatorial seat currently held by Ned Nwoko in the 2027 general elections.

Both politicians, now members of the All Progressives Congress, share a long history of rivalry. Their first major clash dates back to 2011 when Okowa, then of the Peoples Democratic Party, defeated Nwoko, who ran under the Democratic Peoples Party, to secure the Delta North senatorial seat.

Okowa later served as senator from 2011 to 2015 before becoming governor of Delta State, while Nwoko’s path to the Senate took longer. After failed attempts, he eventually won the seat in 2023 under the PDP, with backing from Okowa, who was then the party’s vice presidential candidate.

However, political dynamics have since shifted. Nwoko defected to the APC in January 2025, citing internal divisions within the PDP. Months later, Okowa and key stakeholders, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, also moved to the ruling party, setting the stage for a possible intra party clash.

Although Okowa has yet to officially declare his ambition, growing endorsements from groups within Delta North suggest he may enter the race. Analysts say his strong grassroots network and influence over the region’s political structure could give him an edge.

On the other hand, Nwoko remains a formidable contender. With prior legislative experience and increasing national visibility, particularly through his advocacy for the creation of Anioma State, he is widely regarded as a resilient and strategic politician.

Observers believe the APC primary could be fiercely contested, especially if consensus fails and both men insist on running. The outcome may hinge on party dynamics, delegate support, and the candidates’ ability to mobilize grassroots backing.

As preparations for party primaries gradually take center stage, Delta North is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political battlegrounds in the lead up to 2027, with both camps expected to deploy significant influence and resources.
