Iranian newspapers on Wednesday ridiculed Donald Trump for his claims of ongoing diplomatic discussions with Iran, publishing cartoons portraying him as Pinocchio with an elongated nose.
The conservative daily Javan ran a front page image of Trump looming over a map of the Strait of Hormuz under the headline “The world’s most pathetic and dishonourable liar.” The paper accused him of making false statements to calm markets and push down surging oil prices following hostilities initiated by Israel and the United States in late February.
Other media outlets joined in the ridicule. The Tasnim News Agency depicted Trump with dishevelled hair and a defeated expression, while Sobh-e No labelled his statements as “the politics of lies.”
Iran’s armed forces also mocked Trump in a widely broadcast video, suggesting he was “negotiating with himself.” Spokesperson Ebrahim Zolhari, noted for his multilingual statements and frequent television appearances, drew attention by adapting one of Trump’s catchphrases to say: “Trump, you’re fired!”
The media response highlights Tehran’s rejection of Trump’s announcement of talks just hours before a self-imposed ultimatum, and the wider Iranian portrayal of the US president as untrustworthy in the context of Middle East tensions.
