The Nigerian Senate suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following allegations of misconduct. The suspension was based on findings from the Senate’s Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which cited her refusal to adhere to assigned seating arrangements, speaking without recognition, and making disrespectful remarks towards Senate leadership.

Prior to the suspension, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. She alleged that during a visit to his residence in December 2023, Akpabio made inappropriate advances, including holding her hand and suggesting they spend quality time together. Additionally, she claimed that Akpabio implied she could advance her legislative agenda if she “took care” of him.

The Senate dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition, citing procedural violations. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele stated that the petition failed to meet the established requirements for submission. He emphasized that the suspension was due to her misconduct and not related to the harassment allegations.

The suspension has sparked significant controversy. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemned the action, accusing the Senate leadership of attempting to cover up the allegations against Akpabio. The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) also criticized the suspension, describing it as unconstitutional and detrimental to democracy.

In response to the suspension, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hajia Imaan Suleiman, expressed concern over the handling of sexual harassment allegations within the Senate. She pledged to engage with Senate leadership to seek an amicable resolution.

Despite the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to continue representing her constituents. She has also filed a lawsuit against Akpabio, seeking 100 billion naira in damages.

The incident has highlighted ongoing challenges related to gender dynamics and the treatment of women in Nigerian politics. It has also raised questions about the Senate’s commitment to addressing sexual harassment allegations within its ranks.
