NDLEA Intercepts Over 134kg of Illicit Drugs in Ebonyi Crackdown

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking in Ebonyi State, intercepting a total of 134.483 kilograms of illicit substances within the last quarter of 2025.

State Commander Jude Ahamefule disclosed the development in Abakaliki, revealing that 157 suspected drug dealers were arrested during the period. The suspects include 123 males and 34 females, ranging in age from 14 to 84 years.

According to the agency, the seized drugs include large quantities of cannabis, alongside smaller amounts of amphetamine, , tramadol, diazepam, and other controlled substances. Notably, a significant volume of a locally known mixture referred to as monkey tail was also recovered, highlighting the evolving patterns of drug abuse in the region.

Ahamefule further stated that the command secured the conviction of six offenders, all male, aged between 22 and 55 years. In addition, four individuals undergoing treatment were successfully rehabilitated and discharged, reflecting ongoing efforts to address both enforcement and recovery.

The NDLEA also referred 44 suspects to its counseling unit, where they received guidance and rehabilitation support. Beyond enforcement, the command conducted eleven sensitization campaigns across schools, religious institutions, and local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

Despite these achievements, the commander called for increased support, urging government bos, corporate organizations, and philanthropists to donate operational vehicles. He stressed that improved mobility would enhance patrol and surveillance activities across the state, strengthening the agency’s capacity to curb drug related crimes.

The operation underscores the NDLEA’s continued commitment to tackling drug trafficking and abuse at the grassroots level, while promoting public awareness and rehabilitation as key components of its strategy.
