Danny Welbeck scored twice to lead Brighton and Hove Albion to a 2 1 victory over Liverpool FC on Saturday, dealing a significant blow to the Reds’ push for a Champions League spot next season.

Managed by Arne Slot, Liverpool entered the match in high spirits after a dominant midweek win over Galatasaray secured their place in the Champions League quarter finals. However, their momentum was halted on the south coast as Brighton continued their impressive domestic form.

Liverpool were without key players Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah, and suffered an early setback when Hugo Ekitike was forced off with an injury following a challenge involving James Milner.

Brighton took the lead in the 14th minute when Welbeck nodded home after a well worked move involving go Gomez. The goal marked his 11th in the league this season, making him the top scoring English player in the competition.

Liverpool responded through Milos Kerkez, who capitalized on a defensive error by Lewis Dunk to level the score in the 30th minute with a composed finish.

The home side regained the advantage in the 56th minute when Welbeck struck again, finishing confidently after a precise cross from Yankuba Minteh was guided into his path by Jack Hinshelwood. The goal was confirmed after a VAR review.

Despite late substitutions including Federico Chiesa and Andy Robertson, Liverpool could not find an equaliser.

The defeat leaves Liverpool fifth in the Premier League standings, intensifying the battle for Champions League qualification, while Brighton keep their own European ambitions alive.
