The Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, Mr Adetayo Akerele, has reassured residents of the agency’s continued commitment to public safety, environmental sanitation, and traffic order across Lagos.

Akerele made this known during a quarterly media briefing held at the agency’s headquarters in Oshodi on Tuesday. He emphasized that the taskforce remains focused on improving the quality of life for residents through consistent enforcement and public cooperation.

The chairman also issued a strong warning to media organizations against publishing unverified reports. According to him, inaccurate reporting has led to confusion among the public, particularly regarding enforcement activities along the Bus Rapid Transit corridor. He clarified that regulations guiding the corridor are designed for the safety and benefit of all Lagos residents, not for any specific agency.

Addressing a recent viral video alleging misconduct by taskforce officials, Akerele explained that an internal investigation revealed the claims were misleading. He stated that the vehicle in question had been seized for traffic violations and that officers acted within the law after the driver attempted to evade arrest.

Akerele further addressed allegations of extortion, stressing that the agency operates strictly within legal boundaries and does not tolerate misconduct. He reiterated that no personal interest should override the collective responsibility of maintaining order in the state.

In addition, he announced the resumption of the monthly voluntary sanitation exercise starting in April. The initiative aims to promote public health and environmental cleanliness, with full participation from the taskforce.

The chairman concluded by urging residents and media stakeholders to collaborate with the agency in fostering a safer, cleaner, and more orderly Lagos.
