The Federal Road Safety Corps has ordered the nationwide deployment of personnel and operational equipment for its 2026 Eid el Fitr special patrol operation aimed at ensuring safer travel during the festive period.

The directive was issued by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, who said the operation will run from March 17 to March 22, 2026. The move is part of efforts to reduce road crashes and ensure smooth traffic flow on major highways across Nigeria as millions of travellers prepare for the celebration.

According to a statement released on Monday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, the special patrol is in line with the corps statutory responsibility to promote safe road use nationwide.

Mohammed explained that the operation will feature increased patrol visibility, strategic positioning of rescue teams and expanded public awareness campaigns to guide motorists during the Sallah celebrations.

He noted that the Eid el Fitr season often comes with heavy vehicular movement as Muslim faithful travel across the country to celebrate with family and friends. As a result, the corps has mobilised operational resources to manage the expected surge in traffic.

The FRSC said it will maintain 24 hour patrol operations along critical road corridors across the country. The patrol will be supported by rescue teams, ambulances, tow trucks, patrol vehicles and motorcycles to ensure quick response to emergencies.

Authorities also revealed that patrol teams will focus on the immediate removal of road obstructions and constant monitoring of traffic situations to reduce delays for road users.

During the operation, enforcement teams will target major traffic offences including speeding, dangerous overtaking, tyre violations, lane indiscipline, road obstruction, overloading, mix loading of passengers and goods, seat belt violations and the use of mechanically defective vehicles.

Sector commanders across the country have been directed to ensure full deployment of patrol vehicles, advanced life support ambulances, radar guns, breathalysers, traffic cones, motorcycles and communication equipment.

The corps also disclosed that it will collaborate with other agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to ensure effective emergency response and maintain order on highways.

In addition, the FRSC will use its broadcast platform, National Traffic Radio 107.1FM, to provide motorists with real time traffic updates, travel advisories and alternative routes throughout the operation.

The Corps Marshal wished Muslim faithful a peaceful celebration and urged motorists to obey traffic rules, avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy while travelling during the festive period.
