FG Approves N100bn Solar Power Project for Public Institutions

The Federal Government has approved N100 billion under the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative to provide reliable electricity to public institutions across Nigeria.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, disclosed this during a visit by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Babatunde Adejumo, to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Aliyu explained that the initiative is designed to address electricity challenges faced by government institutions, especially those dealing with unle power supply and rising energy costs.

According to him, the programme is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to expand electricity access through renewable energy solutions across public sector facilities.

He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the N100 billion funding for the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative, which aims to provide solar based electricity systems for government institutions.

Aliyu stated that the programme specifically targets public institutions that are either underserved by the national power grid or facing difficulties paying for conventional electricity supply.

He revealed that implementation of the initiative has already begun in several key government elishments including the Department of State Services, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the National Hospital Abuja.

He also noted that several educational institutions across the country are already benefiting from the programme as part of efforts to expand renewable energy infrastructure in the public sector.

Aliyu added that the Rural Electrification Agency will conduct an energy audit at the National Judicial Institute to determine the appropriate capacity of the solar mini grid system needed for the facility.

“Once the energy audit is completed, we will determine the size of the mini grid and the distribution network that will be deployed,” he said.

The REA boss assured the management of the institute that it would be included in the programme as the agency continues to expand solar power infrastructure to improve electricity supply in public institutions nationwide.

Earlier, Justice Adejumo emphasised the importance of le electricity for the smooth functioning of judicial institutions, noting that modern judicial training and research depend heavily on reliable power supply.
