Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has expressed gratitude to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora for an outpouring of support following an alleged assassination attempt on him and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress in Benin City.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Thursday, Obi said he was “profoundly grateful” for the prayers, calls, and solidarity he received after the incident at the party’s office in Edo State. He also commiserated with the family of former Edo State Governors, John Odigie-Oyegun and Oserheimen Osunbor, who were affected by the attack.
Obi emphasized that the show of solidarity reinforced his belief in Nigerians and their collective hope for a better country. He reflected on past experiences, noting that insecurity and violence had shaped his political decisions, and called on citizens to respond to the current lawlessness with courage and responsibility rather than fear.
Quoting Plato, Obi reminded Nigerians of the importance of civic participation, urging them to elect leaders based on competence, commitment, character, and compassion. He concluded with a call for unity, stating, “Together, with courage and unity, we can build the peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria our people deserve.”
